Whippet

Whippets are referred as a “Poor Man’s Race Horse”. Whippets can easily out beat any other dog in running as they are one of the fastest runners amongst dog breeds.

About Whippet Breed

Whippets are 18.5 to 22.5 inches tall, while the bitches are a little less in height. These dogs weigh anywhere between 25 and 40 pounds. They come in different colors with marked patterns on the body. Pure white, red, blue, coal black to fawn are some of the colors this dog breed is found in. They have a life span of 12 to 15 years. This dog has had a reference since the early civilization.

Other dogs that come under the same breed are the Italian Greyhound, the Saluki, the Borzoi, the English Greyhound, the Irish wolfhound, the Ibiza hound etc which are known for their strength as great runners and hunter dogs.

Physical Features of Whippet Dogs

These are medium size sight hounds having a muscular and powerful body which denotes fitness, speed and elegance. This breed carries an expression showing alertness, has large dark brown or black color eyes, small ears, powerful muzzle having great strength to bite, long and graceful neck. Their nose is evenly pigmented and they have long tapering tail reaching almost up to its hind legs.

Whippet as Pet Dogs

These dogs are quite and gentle. Unlike other dogs, they like to laze around the whole day. Whippets are very attached to the owner. They are not of the snappy type and are also friendly with visitors and young children. Due to their friendly nature, they make excellent pets especially for senior citizens. Male whippets are more loyal than the female ones and are not very aggressive.

Special Traits of Whippet Dogs

Bitches are more strong willed and are of complex nature. They are not suitable for kennel life as their coat is not highly insulated to protect them from cold weather. They are happy, when they are indoors and like to be seated on their owner’s lap. Leaving them unleashed on roads can be problematic, as they do not have any traffic sense. In spite of this, whippets are the most sought after as hunting, racing and companion dogs. The whippet loves to sleep in the cockroach position. Whippets are the most valuable gazehounds and are known to hunt by sight rather than by scent. The nearest resemblance of this breed can be found in the English and the Italian greyhound. It is definitely a pleasure to have these sleek silky bodied creatures.
