Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was firstly introduced to the United States in 1946 and officially recognized by the AKC in 1973. Though it is one of the oldest Irish breeds, its first public presentation was in 1933. For hundreds of years, it performed farm work such as killing vermin, rounding up cattle and sheep, and guarding the house and property.

Wheaten Terrier native is Ireland and it is a happy and friendly dog it loves and trust everyone. The wheaten are gentle, intelligent and quick learners.



Wheaten Terriers ade medium-sized, compact and squarely proportioned dog. This breed seems to have square structure and is well built, level back , deep chest and straight muscular legs. Wheaten Terriers head is medium long with flat skull and a square muzzle. Ears are v-shaped and fold forward, level with the skull.

The Wheaten single coat is soft and silky, fairly long and can range from slightly range wavy to curly. Wheaten coat on the feet is rounded and the coat on the bottom of the pads is removed. Wheaten is a sturdily built dog with good bone, well sprung ribs and powerful movement front and rear.

Wheaten is cheerful, bold, assertive, courageous, inquisitive and has great deal of personality. This needs to get involved in everything that is happening at home. Its neck is medium in length, clean and strong, not throaty. Wheaten Terrier are confident, good tempered, affectionate, intelligent and humorous.

Born in black, but lighten to the final adult wheaten color by about 2 years of age.

A dog's height varies from 18 to 20 inches while bitch's height varies from 17 to 19 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 35 to 45 pounds while bitches weight vary between 30 to 40 pounds.

A healthy Wheaten dog lives about 12 to 15 years.



Wheaten possess stamina, gameness and gaiety, it is more stable and steady than other Terriers. This breed is sweet-tempered, self-confident and easy-going. This dog breed is an alert, intelligent and quick learners. Wheaten Terrier are straightforward nature and they should be handled in a straightforward manner. They make a great watchdog and bark at the arrival of the guests. This breed is an active but not an hyperactive and it is always eager to make new friends. Wheaten is alert, cheerful, watchful and curious. They are very sensitive and reflect the moods of those around them.

Wheaten Terrier as a Pet

Wheaten Terrier pets usually loves to play with children. They are moderately active indoors and a small yard will do, it will not tolerate heat very well. This breed needs regular exercise with a straightforward manner and they are good for apartment life. Wheaten Terrier is good for allergy suffers and a well-groomed dog will shed very little. Pets can be customized to different people, sounds, surfaces, conditions and toys will adapt more quickly to new training and surroundings.
