A West Highland White Terrier is generally referred to as a Westie. Their place of origin is believed to be Scotland sometime during the middle of the 19th century. They were primarily raised with the aim of controlling excessive population of fox, otters and other minor rodents.

pet. This is a small dog but has a well balanced and hardy built. They are generally preferred for dog exhibitions, as they have quite good showmanship, provided they are groomed properly.
Physical Appearance
Westie is particularly a double coat
breed. Their outer coat is quite harsh and wiry while their undercoat is close, fluffy and extremely soft. As their name suggests, their coat is brilliant white in colors which helps to lend them an extremely elegant look. Their eyes are almond-shaped, dark and deep set. They are known for their penetrating gaze. Their height generally varies between ten to eleven inches, when fully grown. Their jaw is closely fitted with scissors bite. Their ears are quite small, pointed and extremely erect.

Most of the people, who take up Westie as a pet, prefer them for their elegant looks. However, they demand personal care and attention. Their coat needs to be brushed twice in a week and professionally stripped bi-annually. Individuals who live a sheltered, urban life should not consider taking Westie up as a pet because this breed loves to run around and explore. They are not suited for apartment living. Although they make quite good watchdogs, they can be quite demanding and assertive.
West Highland White Terrier is not very friendly with other pets in the house. In fact, they prefer to be the only pet in a household.

West Highland White Terrier is quite an intelligent and popular breed. Although they are extremely devoted to their owners, they do not appreciate being cuddled excessively. It can be playful and quiet and determined at the same time. They are also quite energetic and spunky. They need to be groomed from a very young age, especially socialization skills, if an individual wishes to raise them as pet.
