Weimaraner was developed by Noblemen from the court of Weimar in 1800's and they were originally known as “Weimar Pointer” this breed was prized because of its excellent hunting skills. This dog breed often called as “Grey Ghost” and it was first imported to the United States in 1929 by Howard Knight who has founded the U.S breed club.

It is an excellent breed for sportsmen, they are fast and powerful dogs. They are originally appeared in the 19th century. Weimaraner is a dog with excellent problem solving abilities and they are good for their family pet, Protection, sports and watchdog. Weimaraner became very popular American dogs.



They are outstanding hunting dog breed their head and ears are a bit lighter in color than the rest of the body. Weimaraner are sleek moderately large, athletic dog with beautiful lines and a short fine, and smooth coat. Their eyes are amber blue-gray or gray with an intelligent expression.

Its ears are long and pendant, limbs are long and muscular. This breed has webbed feet for swimming and its head is long and aristocratic, muzzle is strong. It is blessed with excellent sense of smell and effortless, smooth gait. Weimaraner are graceful, alert and dignified with kind expression.

Weimaraner are powerful working dogs with great stamina they need lots of regular exercise and it need plenty of opportunities to run free they should not be exercised after the meals. Smooth, short-haired coat is easy to keep in peak condition. Keep their nails trimmed and this breed is an average shedder.

They range shades of mouse-gray to silver gray.

A dog's standard height varies from 24 to 27 inches while bitch's height varies from 22 to 25 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 55 to 70 Pounds while bitches weight vary between 50 to 65 Pounds.

A healthy Weimaraner dog lives about 10 to 12 years.



It is an alert and friendly dog breed and they are energetic and intelligent. Weimaraner need an active and confident owner to train, socialize and exercise it. This is fast and powerful breed, and very brave, loyal and it has strong prey instinct. It needs to live indoors as the member of the family and it is natural protector, this likes to bark. Weimaraner make exceptional human companion and these are very good with children, family pet and good watchdogs.

Weimaraner as a Pet

Weimaraner pet is friendly, eager to work and intelligent. They can be very willful and opinionated. Generally these are protective companions and gentle it gets along well with other dogs but not cats. This breed does not respond to harsh training. Weimaraner love to play ball, romp, hike and hunt it should be given sufficient exercise when it was young so that it can be healthy.
