Two thousand ears ago the Tibetan Terrier was originated in Tibet at Lost Valley. It is not a terrier, not a spaniel. This ancient breed is a true herding dog. This dog is called as a “Holy Dog of Tibet” and also known as Good Luck Dog or Luck Bringer.

The England was Recognized this breed in 1937 and imported into the US in 1956. In 1973 Tibetan Terrier was recognized by American Kennel club. Next they were recognized by CKC, ANKC, NKC, ACR, FCI and APRI. The talents of Tibetan Terrier are agility, watchdog, herding and competitive obedience.



Tibetan Terrier is a small, compact and powerful dog with square proportion. The dog breed have long double coat that covers the eyes which resemble a miniature sheepdog. The outer coat is profuse and fine but never silky or woolly and the undercoat is woolly and very soft. The eyes are set fairly wide apart, large, actually dark brown in color and may appear black with dark eye rims.

The ears are heavily feathered with a "V" shaped leather, falling not too close to the head, Pendant which are proportionate to the head. The length of the neck is proportionate to the body and head. Tibetan Terrier tail is medium in length, set on fairly high and falls forward over the back, heavily furnished, may curl to either side.

Combination of all colors like black, white, tan, gray and any single color.

The height of Tibetan Terrier dog is 14-16 inches.

Normally the weight of Tibetan Terrier is 18-30 lbs.

A healthy Tibetan Terrier dog lives approximately13-14 years.



Tibetan Terriers are highly intelligent, deeply devoted, and exceedingly loyal to their family. They may not do well if left alone for long periods of time and may thrive human interaction. The nick name of Tibetan Terrier is Dhoki Apso. This dog is very active at the time of learning and is extremely eager to please.

They require regular exercise daily in the form of long walk or play sessions. They are compatible with apartment or city life when sufficiently exercised. And inactive indoors but needs small yard. Tibetan Terrier breed should have lot of regular opportunities to run. Tibetan Terrier make good watchdogs and will bark their alarm at unusual sounds to announce visitors.

Tibetan Terrier as a Pet

The Tibetan Terrier is of medium size, shaggy, hardy, and versatile breed which is not only makes a fine companion but also highly capable of herding, guarding, and protecting. These dogs are very sensitive and react to their owner's moods, emotions and feelings. They are well behaved and considerate with the children. And also may wary with strangers without any aggressive expression. Generally This breed is good with other home pets like dogs and may need to learn to accept cats.
