Tibetan Mastiffs originated in Tibet and have descended from many ancient Tibetan breeds such as Colossuses and Mastiffs. Though the breed originated in Tibet, it is rarely found in its native land now. The first Tibetan mastiff was gifted to queen Elizabeth of England. From then on this breed began to multiply in the European countries. England saw the refining of this breed further.

The Tibetan mastiff is known for its courage and bravery. It is perhaps for this reason that they are used to guard livestock since they can fight the predators courageously. In olden days, the Tibetan mastiff was used to guard an entire village.

Physical Appearance of Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan mastiff has a slender and a muscular body. They are agile and strong. They have a broad and a large skull which is however in proportion to the body. The eyes are medium sized and set apart. They are usually brownish or black in colors. The neck is long and muscular and is slightly arched. The eyes are rimmed closely. The dog ears are medium sized and fall on to the sides of the head. The ears are soft and are covered with soft short hair. They are usually cocked up when they are alert or sense something.

The feet of the Tibetan Mastiff are strong and padded. They also make great swimmers. The tail is bushy and is held upright. The tail has more hairs at the tip which curl. The Tibetan spaniel is usually brown or black in colors. They are available in shades of black grey or tan. Very rarely does one find some patches of white on the chest of a Tibetan spaniel. A healthy Tibetan spaniel dog breed can grow up to a height of twenty six inches and weigh about 150 pounds. They have a life expectancy of around twelve years on an average.

Character of Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan is a very obedient pet. They are shy by nature and hence may not socialize much or be friendly with strangers. So it is better to give a formal introduction before they are brought in contact with new members. They however like children. Since they enjoy being outdoors a lot, it is better not to choose the Tibetan spaniel as a pet if you live in an apartment as they may be sad and unhappy in a confined place. The love playing outdoors and may enjoy a game of ball or Frisbee. They however do not have the stamina for jogging and may not be an ideal jogging companion. Tibetan Mastiff dogs thrive better in a cold weather as compared to a hot environment. They tend to bark a lot when they are outdoors and have a tendency to jump and escape from their walled environment. However, when they are indoors, they are relatively quiet. Hence it is always advised that the owner fences his house when he has decided to bring home a Tibetan spaniel. They enjoy long walks.

The Tibetan Mastiff as a Pet

The Tibetan is a friendly and a calm dog. Usually quiet, they are quite social and independent. The independence sometimes makes them aloof and quite cut off from the others. They enjoy playing games outdoors and like children as well as other pets. Being friendly, they will obey your orders too and this makes training them also easy.
