Standard Poodle




Standard poodle is a non sporting dog breed. It was originated in France or Germany. The name poodle comes from the German word Pudel, which means one who plays in water. Poodle is developed from French water dog and Barbet. This breed was used in Germany and France as a waterfowl retriever and as a gun dog. In France this breed is called as caniche, or duck dog. Poodle has been used to sniff out truffles lying underground in the woods. Toy Poodles became royal favorites, The toy and miniature poodles varieties were bred down from larger dogs, and now a days they are known as standard poodles. The three sizes are considered as one breed and are judged by the same standard. It is used as a companion and show dog.



The standard poodle is an elegant, medium to large-sized dog, The head and muzzle are long and skull is rounded with a slight top. The ears are wide and hanging close to the head and its eyes are oval and generally very dark. The tail is docked to half the original length for this dog. Its neck is strong and well prroportioned and chest is deep and moderately wide. Forelegs are straight and parallel when viewed from the front. When viewed from the side the elbow is directly below the highest point of the shoulder. Standard poodle's coat is groomed into three basic styles, the pet clip with relatively short hair all over the entire body, the English saddle clip, and the continental clip, with the rear half of the body shaved, bracelets left around the ankles, and pom-poms left on the tail and hips. Its feet are rather small, oval in shape with toes well arched and cushioned on thick firm pads.

Standard poodles are sensitive, intelligent, fun loving, lively, playful, good natured, sensitive, adaptive, and eager to learn. It can be used as a good watch dog and it loves to play, run and swim. Poodle dogs bark a lot or may be shy of strangers but is very bright, alert, lively, responsive and devoted to the family. The training for this breed is easy. They are suited for apartment life and are active indoors. These dog breed needs lot of exercise.

Standard poodle is good with other pets and children They are pleasant, happy and sensitive. The standard poodle tends to be a bit calmer than the smaller variety of Poodles. They need to be with people and dislike being alone. The standard poodle is good with other dogs. Some Standards are good guard dogs and some can be trained as hunters.
