About Staffordshire Bull Terrier


The Staffordshire bull terrier is a breed which was developed in the early days by crossing the bulldog with the terriers of the day. Staffordshire is a breed of dog, originally bred for bull-baiting and dog fighting. It amuses everyone with its interesting characteristics and blocky appearance. Firstly, this dog was known by the name of Bull Terrier. This name was changed afterwards and this dog came to be known as Saffordshire bull terrier. This was done in order to clarify the difference between this breed and the pure breeds of Bull Terrier.

Physical Appearance of Staffordshire Bull Terrier


Staffordshire bull terriers are of medium size, standing at a height of 14-16 inches from the shoulders and weighing 28-30 pounds. They have a smooth soft coat which requires less maintenance or less grooming. Colors are red, fawn, white, black, blue and any of these colors can come in shades of white or brindle. Pronounced cheek muscles make their head look like chunky. Ears rise as they are prick and small. Their tail is ported and raised to a medium length. They reveal their strength from their deep chest.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier as a Pet

The Staffordshires are known for their loyalty to their possessors. Their stability and composite temperament makes them a good family pet. When trained properly, they can become fond of people and will not carry any signs of aggression in their blood. They are normally excellent with the children and their small size makes them well fit with any of the family member. Stafford's are seen to be cooperative with other pets and dogs that are not aggressive.

Stafford's are seen to carry good sense of humour and affectionate nature. They are very friendly in nature, especially when trained properly. Playful nature of theirs is reflected in their acts with the children. Intelligence is the main intuitive of these dogs and this makes them good household dogs. They are playful, always ready to work and lovable at all the times. Persistent and activeness is also revealed from their qualities.

Staffordshire bull terrier requires frequent process of training. They are expected to live life of 10-16 years. They are termed as fighting dogs, so other dogs should not be brought close to them, especially those who seek to fight. Dogs are known to be the best friends at time of loneliness. Staffordshire Bull Terriers prove to be the best companions because of their generous and loving nature.
