About Shetland Sheepdog

The origin of Shetland Sheepdogs can be traced back to the year 1911, where this breed was first recognized by the AKC. Unlike other mix breeds, Shetland Sheepdogs were not bred by selecting small members of bigger breeds. They are bred from herding dogs and Border collies and originate from Scotland. They derive their name from the 'Shetland Islands' located in Scotland, which was also called by the name of Sheltie.

Physical Appearance

Some main attributes of the physical characteristics of this breed of dog are as follows:
  • Size: Shetland Sheepdogs can be found around 13 - 16 inches tall. Generally, they carry a height of 14-14.5 inches
  • Weight: Weigh around 14-27 pounds
  • Coat: Outer layer of the Sheepdogs coat is long and harsh. It is straight and wiry whereas the undercoat is usually dense, furry and shorter than the outer coat.
  • Color: Color schemes in which these dogs are found are sable, black and white with tan markings, blue merle, blue-black an black-white
  • Eyes: Shetland sheepdogs have dark almond shaped eyes that are medium in size.
Apart from the above mentioned features, Shetland Sheepdogs have small flexible ears and well rounded muzzle which is as long as their skull. Long tail and black nose are other physical attributes of their body.

Characteristics of Shetland Sheepdog

Loyalty and obedience is deeply inculcated within these dogs. They are sharp and can become watchful too. Excellent at guarding your house against strangers, these dogs can become sociable and playful with your children and are tolerant towards other animals and pets in house. They are quite good at getting trained as well. Competitions are something which they look forward for as competitions provide them a chance to maintain their agility.

Shetland Sheepdog as a Pet

This breed of dog is always eager to please its owner. Hence, these dogs will always obey the commands given by their owners and thus, make them an outstanding family dog. Apart from this, they are easy to train as well. They can perform dog trick and are good at playing games with children. Affection and loyalty makes them considerate towards strangers as well. But this does not mean that they like being approached by strangers. Shetland sheepdogs are quite vulnerable as they are small in size. You need to take them for walks and maintain their activity levels. Hence, make sure that you know enough about them before you actually get them into your home.
