Sharpei

The aficionados can only be fascinated by the looks of Sharpei, more commonly known as the Chinese Shar-Pei. The Sharpei puppies have layers of wrinkles and look as if they are folded in a blanket whereas the adult dog is an uncommon canine dog breed.

About Sharpei

Related to the Tibetian Mastiff and Chow Chow, Sharpeis are an ancient breed of dogs that were destroyed during the Chinese Communist regime. They were developed to help the farmers in Southern China to help in cattle herding. In 1970’s, this breed was rescued from extinction by a rescue program started in US. In 1988, these dogs joined the American Kennel Club’s miscellaneous group. Today, this breed of dog ranks 25th in terms of popularity amongst 137 different breeds of dogs.

Physical Appearance

When looking at the Shar-Peis, you might imagine a hippopotamus since their body is compact and square shaped like them. Their tiny ears lie against their head and their cute tiny tail is little curled at the end. They have a deep chest and their feet are quite compact.

Following are some other physical features:
  • Height: 18 - 20 inches
  • Weight: Adult Sharpei dogs are 40-55 pounds in weight
  • Life: Around 8 - 10 years
  • Colors: They come in different solid color shades like cream, red, black, brown, sable, silver, blue etc.
  • Coat: These dogs have a harsh or hoarse coat which comes in 3 verities including brush, horse and bear. Although the brush coat is little longer than the horse coating, both are equally harsh. Only the bear coat is soft and wavy. Their coat should however be only one inch long at the withers.
