The Samoyed breed is believed to have originated in Siberia. It is also popularly known as “The Smiley Dog” or the “Smiling Sammy”. It is basically known as a herd and companion dog.

About Samoyed

Samoyed is considered to be an extremely gentle and friendly dog breed, which take no time in warming up to a stranger. They are extremely friendly and extremely sociable. Its beautiful outer appearance and friendly nature make it a preferred choice as a companion dog for a large number of individuals.

Physical Appearance

Samoyed falls under the breed of working dogs and has generally white, cream, or white and biscuit colored coat. It has a long, thick coat which needs to be groomed regularly. Their undercoat should be short and thick with wool like texture to it. Its heavy coat helps him to survive in harsh climates of Siberia. Their eyes are almond-shaped and can be either black or brown in color. It has a short, furry tail touching its back. A male Samoyed can weigh between 45-65 pounds while a Samoyed bitch may weigh 35-50 pounds. They grow up to an average height of 19-21 inches.

Samoyed as a Pet

It is an extremely friendly dog, thus making it a preferred companion for young children. Most of the individuals prefer to take up Samoyed as a pet for guarding purposes. They have the tendency to bark excessively, if they spot a stranger approaching. However, they are not compatible with small pets and other dogs of different breeds.

Since they shed heavily, they need a lot of grooming. When the weather turns warmer, their shedding may increase manifolds thus making, regular brushing a necessity. Its heavy coat has a tendency to attract a lot of dirt, thus making brushing all the more important. It might require a lot of obedience training before it can be taken up as a pet. It also needs sufficient exercise to remain fit.

Character Traits

Samoyed is believed to be quite a peaceful yet active breed. It is extremely loyal to its master. Though it gets pretty friendly with strangers easily, it prefers to remain with its master on most occasions. Its intelligence level is pretty high as well.

Specific Traits of Samoyed

They have a tendency to become quite willful and stubborn during training periods and thus should be handled with care. If you are looking forward to take up a beautiful, obedient breed of dogs, Samoyed should definitely fit the bill.
