Saint Bernard is very ancient breed that was founded in AD 980. This is called by other names as the “gentle giant” and they are originated from native dogs that are present in the Alps for millenia. Its use and popularity as a rescue dog began in the middle of the 17th century. The first
Saint Bernard were introduced in Monastery as guard dog.
This is heaviest and large dog breeds in the world. It consists of two varieties such as short-haired and long-haired, short-haired variety is used for mountain work because it can tolerate cold temperatures and long-haired variety coat tends to collect icicles.
Saint Bernard are very talented in search and rescue, watchdogging and carting. More than 200 people have been saved by this amazing servant of mankind.
Saint Bernard are very large, muscular, strong and powerful dog. Its face and ears are shaded with black and their expression is intelligent and gentle. These are highly developed sense of smell and they had sixth sense about danger impending from avalanches and storms.
Their hair is slightly longer and feathering on the thighs and legs. The eyes are set more towards front, mid-size, dark brown and set deep.
Saint Bernard ears stand slightly away from the head at the base and then drop sharply, but they are not altered and its face must have more furrowed wrinkles.
Saints Benard both coats are easy to groom, short walks and play sessions are best for the
dog breed upto two years old. It sheds twice a year and for this breed shampoo may strips the coat of its water-resistant, oily for this purpose it should be bathed if necessary only with mild soaps.
