The Redbone Coonhound is an American breed which is actually a cross between the Bloodhound and the Foxhound. The Bloodhound is native of Ireland and the former is an American native. This breed was brought to the picture in 1840 by F.L Birdsong. The
Redbone Coonhound has a distinct smell and makes excellent hunting dogs. These dogs were earlier used to hunt down raccoons, bears and bobcats. This breed is registered with the UKC. The Redbone Coon hound is so called perhaps because of the efficiency with which they can hunt down raccoons.
Redbone Coonhound’s Physical Appearance
They are muscular and well boned. Their bone structure is broad and strong. The body has a slight arch and the skull shape too is in proportion to the rest of the body. There is a slight depression between the brow and the nose. These dogs have a furry coat and a straight upright bushy tail. Their upright tail is an indication of the proud trait which almost all the dogs of this
dog breed possess. Generally slender, these dogs need regular exercise to keep them healthy. The exercise is again very important for the bones to retain their strength and prevent the muscle from turning into fat.
They are not very furry animals. They have a smooth coat and with regular brushing, it is easy to maintain it. A healthy Coonhound can grow up to a height of around twenty seven inches and weigh anywhere between fifty to seventy pounds. They have slightly webbed feet which make them excellent swimmers. They an also gain footing on almost any type of terrain. Available in shades of red or white and red, these
dogs can live up to an age of twelve years. Some dogs have known to live up to even fifteen years.
