Puli

Puli




The Puli was the ancient sheep dog of Hungary brought by the Magyars when they migrated over 1000 years ago from Central Asia. Invaders killed many people in Hungary during the 16th century. People from Western Europe again began to repopulate hungary along with their sheepdogs in the 17th century. The Puli combined wit the sheepdogs. Some people believe that the Puli's existed as the working sheepdog hundreds of years before Christ. At the time of second world war the Puli breed had almost died making its count very less. Later a controlled breeding program supported by dedicated breeders throughout the world made the survival of these Hungarian dog breeds. It was bred by Emil Raitsits and his companions from long haired Hungarian sheepdogs in 20th century. The name of the breed was first mentioned in the 18th century. The Puli was the herding dog known for its light and quick mental alertness while moving. They are successfully used as police dogs.



The Puli is a Hungarian sheepdog, strong, made of cords coat touching the ground. Their body shape is square and though fine boned, they are actually muscular. The head from front gives rounded appearance and from the side gives egg-shaped look. Ears are medium sized and eyes are almond shaped, dark brown in color. The breed does not shed its coat. The coat needs significant grooming to keep its cords clean and attractive. The coat can also be trimmed to a short coat for lower maintenance. The corded coat attracts many people to select the Puli breed. The Puli's coat protects it while living outdoors without any comforts.

Generally weighs around 22pounds (13Kg).

Healthy puli lives for about 10-12 years.



Puli is a hardy dog breed and have no major health problems, adaptive to most surroundings and are good family pets. Some of these dogs are fond of swimming and enjoy very much but, not all dogs are capable of swimming. They are very obedient in nature. Their inborn intelligence not only makes easy to train them but also gives them a mind of their own. This dog often shows great response to humans moods actively identifying, understanding and entering into others feelings. The typical character of developing a systematic plan of action to get what it wants cannot be understood by the owner's when they first spend time with Puli.

Puli as a Pet

Puli dogs are watchful of strangers but they never show eagerness to fight, instead gives vocal warning if they feel that their owner is being threatened. Puli dogs are suited to all climates. It is good with children and other pets. They survive and do well both in extreme hot and cold conditions. The adult Puli likes to play games and have fun. It has great sense of humor.
