Puggle



Puggle is not a breed by itself. It is a cross breed of two dogs, a pug and a beagle. The history of Puggle is a bit hazy. This cross breed is recognized by American Canine Hybrid club. It created a new trend in creating hybrid dogs. Hybrid dogs are dogs born from parents of different breeds and are also known as designer dogs. It is not a purebred dog. Puggles are native to the United States.

The first Puggles ever bred were in 2000 by a breeder Wallace Havens. It takes best characteristics from both of its parent breeds. They stand as an example of what dogs are all about-faithfulness and companionship. Puggles show superior qualities arising from the crossbreeding of genetically two different breeds of dogs. They are healthier and live longer than other purebred dogs.



Puggles nose is longer than a pug dog and have long and flexible dropping ears, short legs. It's hair is short which is black, grayish brown or silver in color and are known to shed small. They have a curled tail. They have deeply wrinkled forehead and is not a hypoallergenic dog. The perfect Puggle has slightly longer and athletic body.

These require low maintenance while grooming like occasional bath, ear cleaning and nail cleaning. Puggles coat consists of short hairs. They have good energy level and love to play. Daily walks are advised for these dogs. They are known for their snuggle appearence which have smooth outer coat. They look short and blunt. Many of the Puggle breed are fawn in color. To keep the outer coat soft and shiny regular brushing must be done.

Color of the Puggle dogs vary. Some appear black in color, some are multi colored, while some are fawn colored.

The fully grown Puggle must stand at 10 and 16 inches at shoulder height.

It weighs between 15-30 pounds.

A healthy Puggle lives for about 10-12 years.



Puggles are ideal family pets as they are sweet tempered, intelligent, playful affectionate dogs. They love to play with children and enjoy walking and running around. Puggles become close with anyone who spends time with them and feed them. This breed dogs can also be easily trained. Puggles grasp and learn to obey commands earlier than most dogs. The commands like sit, come, fetch, roll it, down, stay are easily understood by this dog.

Puggle as a Pet

Puggles pets require a lot of activity, attention, exercise and are adorable. They mix with the other home pets easily and are cute and cuddly companions. They inherited howling character from beagle dogs and howl at occasions. Puggles bark, some seem to be quiet all the time and only bark if anyone comes near the door. They display less health problems when compared to its parent breeds. Puggles are good listeners and so are good lap dogs and are eager to please their owners.
