
Pug is a toy dog breed developed in China. It is one of the older breeds. It is believed to have originated before 400 BC in Asia. Pug has been recognized by the AKC in 1885 and from then it became popular companion dog. It is used for performing tricks and as a watchdogging. The word
pug is derived from the latin Pugnus which means fist. These
breed dogs are prized possessions of the Emperors of China and lived in a most luxurious atmosphere and at that times these dogs are guarded by soldiers. They were taken on trading ships to Holland, where it became popular with the royal family of that time.

The Pug has a square, thick, stocky compact, body. It has a short, flat, black muzzle and velvety ears.
Dogs with rose shaped ears are more preferred. Moles on the cheeks are considered as beauty spots. Its eyes are prominent, expressive, and dark. The back is short, with a level topline. The wrinkles are large and deep and the muzzle is short, blunt, square. Its tail lays in a tight curl.
Pugs have soft and smooth coats. The coat should be smooth and glossy and neither hard nor wooly.
The hair is slightly broken along the curly tail and muzzles are soft. Pug's limbs are straight and strong. Markings are present on the muzzle, ears, and on the fore head. Its legs are very strong, straight, moderate length and are set well under. This
dog breed enjoys long walks, but proper water should always be provided as this breed is prone to breathing problems and tires quickly. Training should be provided at the early stages in life.

Dog's standard height is 12-14 inches while bitch's height is 10-12 inches.

Dog's weight is 13-20 inches while bitch's weight is 13-18 pounds.

A healthy
pug lives for about 12-14 years.

They are perky, rambunctious, loyal, affectionate and loving with a happy disposition. They are playful and charming.
Pugs are clever and mischievous with a heart winning personality. This
