Portuguese Water Dog is known as "dog of water" it has special love of water. These water-loving dogs were used in 5th century to herd fish into waiting fishermen's nets and they are used as a ship to shore messenger. It began in 1958 with the importation of the first pair. They are prevalent in the fishing industries. Portuguese Water Dog was vanished in Europe, and introduced at America in 1950.

Portuguese Water Dog is companion dog, but also excels at water trials, obedience, agility and as a therapy dog and assistance dog. This was accepted as AKC registration in 1980. Popularity of this dog breed is growing and it is a good family friend in many households.



Portuguese Water Dog is a hardy, muscular, medium-sized dog. Somewhat independent but devoted to their family and very intelligent. It never seems to be tire because they are tough and muscular breeds. Their eyes are medium-sized, rounded and black or brown in color.

Their body is slightly longer than it is tall, solid and sturdy. The legs are very straight, strong and parallel. A web-footed dog, they are swimmer and diver of exceptional ability. Portuguese Water Dogs are intelligent, energetic dogs.

It should be brushed and combed regularly. Its ears needs special attention should be taken more care while it is going for swimming and it is an active that enjoys work. Portuguese Water Dogs is an excellent jogging partner and enjoys long walks or free play in a safe area.

Black, white, brown or combination of black or brown with white.

A dog's standard height varies from 20 to 22 inches while bitch's height varies from 17 to 20 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 42 to 55 Pounds while bitches weight vary between 35 to 49 Pounds.

A heathly Portuguese Water Dog lives about 10 to 14 years.



This breed is an active and loves to play but willing to work and it is active dog with great stamina. They need daily mental and physical exercise. They are affectionate and fun to be around. Portuguese Water Dog is a good watchdog and they have good sense of smell. These are obedient, friendly and they are easy to train. It has stable, pleasant temperament and they are brave highly intelligent and trainable. Portuguese Water Dog are keen to work and quick to learn and understand instructions.

Portuguese Water Dog as a Pet

Portuguese Water Dog pets are notorious chewers and they are moderately active indoors and small yard is sufficient. They are water-loving, lively but sensible and loyal dog. It can live outdoors in temperate climates, but portuguese are happier living close to its family and spending days in the yard. These are very good with children and usually accepts other pets.
