Pointer

Pointer is a popular breed which is believed to have its place of origin from various places, such as France, Spain and England. It is known as a fine, upland dog which is remarkable for its fast speed and wide range.

About Pointer

The Pointer has several breeds, such as German Shorthaired Pointer Breeder and the English Pointer. They are powerful, quite graceful and aristocratic in their approach. They are known to carry a proud head wherever they go. They are quite affectionate and intelligent as well. Pointers are particularly preferred as ideal hunting partners.

Physical Appearance

They belong to the breed of sporting dogs. Pointers, generally, have a short coat which does not require too much of grooming. The coat is short, dense and smooth with a shiny appearance. Pointers generally have a liver, lemon, black or orange colored coat which might be mixed with white in certain cases. They live up to twelve to fifteen years on an average. The height for an average Pointer’s height could vary anywhere between 23-25 inches. Their average weight is around 55-70 pounds for males and 45-60 pounds for females.

Pointer as a Pet

Individuals who live in open areas, in natural surroundings should ideally consider taking up Pointers as pet. Grooming Pointers is important. Moreover, they need to be bathed bi-annually. Training this dog breed can be quite a task as they have a very short attention span. It is important to mould them into family ways, right from their puppy stage. Pointers are also known as a tireless breed. They love outdoor activities and can go on playing at a stretch, without any breaks. They need to have loads of outdoor exercises included into their schedule, lest they become destructive.

Character Traits

Pointers are generally famous as an even-tempered dog, who does not mind the company of new people. Although, Pointers do make excellent companions, they are generally not best suited to apartment living. However, they may settle into a regular home after some time, provided they have an experienced handler and are socially groomed from a very young age.

Specific Traits of Pointer

Pointer is specifically known for its hunting instincts. Thus, it is better not to place them with other submissive, passive pets in the house. Also, they are quite an escapist breed. Thus, the owner would be required to fence their houses properly in order to prevent them from running away. If you are looking for a nice hunting mate, Pointer is an ideal companion dog for you.
