Patterdale Terrier and Lakeland Terrier were the members of the same type known as Fell Terriers was introduced in 20th century. This breed was first introduced at USA in 1978. Patterdale were developed in hash environment. They are common in Cumbria this name comes from a village that is located in Cumbria. Patterdale Terrier has working capabilities such as fox, rabbit and rat hunting.

Patterdale Terrier sometimes called as Black Fell Terrier. American Patterdale Terrier named as “Rocky”. This breed bonds strongly with their owners, are intelligent, they are easy to train and become part of the family. They are carefully linebred and these two dog breeds Patterdale Terrier and Fell are well-known as hard-bite Terriers and they can work at any place at any time.



Patterdale Terrier is small, compact Terrier and it has strong muzzle with a level bite. Their ears are v-shaped and moderate in size, it has ability to squeeze into tight burrows. Patterdale Terrier face is thickset and the eyes are inquisitive. Their legs are solid with medium-sized feet and sable pads.

This breed loves to dig so its feet should be cleaned carefully before coming inside. This is not recommended for apartment life and they are inactive indoors because it gets enough exercise during the day. They love to run and enjoy going hiking with owner. Patterdale Terrier had strong neck, jaws and teeth.

Patterdale Terrier needs little grooming it has short and broken coat this should always remain coarse and patterdale has wire variety. Brushing with a firm bristle or a rubber brush will remove excess hair. The fence should be firm in the ground and high enough. This requires minimal grooming is needed to keep the breed in a good shape.

Usually black other colors include like red, liver, grizzle, black and tan.

A dog's standard height varies about 12 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 11 to 13 Pounds.

A healthy Patterdale Terrier dog lives about 11 to 13 years.



This is a hunting companion and it enjoys “curling up at the heating duct” in the house. Patterdale Terrier is a good watchdog it is a hard and persistent. This breed is not easy to obedience train and they have great stamina it can work, quarrel and play with kids. These are bold, confident about their responsibilities. Patterdale Terrier needs daily outdoor exercise so that it is happy and healthy.

Patterdale Terrier as a Pet

Patterdale Terrier pets love to play with children and it loves family life. Every few days it require brushing and they are very independent and loving with other breeds. Its bull Terrier bloodlines make it too fierce to work as a hunter pack hounds. Most pets are allowed to chase rabbits and they do best living in kennels and with other Patterdale Terrier. Though they are small in size but it is a very good watchdog.
