Papillon



Papillon is one of the oldest breed of dog, with a recorded history in Europe more than 700 years. It got its name from the French word for "butterfly". This breed was very popular with the European aristocracy and it is originally called the epagneul nain and sported spaniel-type dropped ears. Papillon breed is recognized in 13th through 15th century at Italian frescoes.

It is also considered that the Papillon was also known as "Dwarf Spaniel". The word "Spaniel" means a dog of spain. Papillon can not be used as field trials, but it is more courage than common sense. ACK was recognized Papillon breed in 1915 and Papillon club of Britian was founded in 1924 while American founded this breed in 1935.



Papillon is a small, friendly and elegant toy dog. Its has dark, round , medium sized and alert with expression eyes. They had small head and skull is of medium width, it is slightly rounded between the ears. Papillon nose, eyes and lips are black in color and its tail is thickly plumed and carried proudly over the body.

Papillon neck is medium in length and chest is medium depth with ribs well sprung. The butterfly ears are carried either erect or drooping, its muzzle is short and a bit pointed. Daily combing and brushing of the long, silky, single coat is important and fairly straightforward.

Its shoulders are well developed and laid back so that it can move freely and hair on feet is short, but fine tufts may appear over toes and grow behind them and forming a point. These dogs are usually clean and odorless, Papillon are average shedders and do not matt or tangle. It should be bathed if necessary with dry shampoos.

Always parti-color or white with patches of any colors.

A dog's standard height vary from 8 to 11 inches while bitch's height vary from 8 to 11 inches.

Dog's weight varies between 8 to 10 Pounds while bitches weight varies between 7 to 9 Pounds.

A healthy Papillon dog lives about 16 years.



Papillon are happy, alert and friendly neither shy nor aggressive. They are well suited for apartment living as well as city life and are good watchdogs. Its activity level is moderate and some Papillon can be timid or nervous. Papillon are gentel, affectionate and love to be cuddled and they may possessiveness of their owner. They are typically easy to housetrain and Papillon generally get long quite well with children and other household pets. This breeds are very intelligent, obedient and quick learners and active, they are so eager to learn new things.

Papillon as a Pet

Papillon pets get along quite with children and other household pets. They respond best to a gentel approach, they love outdoor exercise and enjoys long walks. It is sometimes called as butterfly dog because its ears looks like butterfly wings. Papillon do best with older, considerate children. These are good with cats when they are raised with them from puppyhood. They make an excellent therapy and service dogs. Papillons love to learn and perform tricks. It makes an excellent family pet for any size accommodation and they are loyal, loving and protective.
