Norwich Terrier was officially developed in England as a small ratting dog, it is originated from United Kingdom and it was bred to hunt small vermin. They are officially separated at England in 1964. It was mascot of students at Cambridge University. In earliest this breed was also known as the Jones Terrier and the Cantab Terrier.

Norwich Terrier and Norfolk both came from one breed by the kennel club. Small red Terriers, descendent's of Irish Terriers, had existed in the area in 1960's and they were ancestors of Norwich and this breed was first recognized as show ring in 1935. Norfolk are angular and the Norwich are round. They should not be kept outside or kennel setting because they love the companionship of their owner.



Norwich Terrier is one of the smallest dog breed comparing with all the Terrier breeds it has one of the largest personalities. It has broad and slightly rounded skull. Its coat is combed and brushed atleast once in a week and remove loose, dead haires and prevent matting. It has short, strong, sturdy body with strongly boned legs.

Their eyes are dark and expressive its tail is docked by half. Norwich Terrier breed is shown with a natural coat and the shaggy, medium-length, waterproof coat it can be protected easily. The hair on their head, ears and muzzle except for eyebrows and whiskers are smooth and short.

It should be taken extra care when it is shedding and it is light shedder. Norwich Terrier are active, courageous, affectionate and balanced. This breeds are easy to train but some rules and regulations should be followed. They are good joggers for short distance and little grooming and trimming is required.

All shades like red, wheaten, black and tan and grizzle.

A dog's standard height varies 10 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 10 to 12 Pounds.

A healthy Norwich Terrier dog lives about 12 to 15 Years.



They are gay, fearless, active and affectionate they are energetic and thrive on an active life. Norwich Terrier little dogs love everyone and good with children. They are fairly active at indoors and will do without yard. This is adapt at ratting and rabbiting it is an alert dog with good hearing which makes a good watchdog. Norwich tolerate all types of weather and they are reserved with strangers and have to be socialized well so that it can stop chasing cats.

Norwich Terrier as a Pet

Norwich Terrier pet likes to play with children and make good family dogs. They love to go long walks as well as automobile trips with the family. Pets can be trained easily comparing to other pets. It love toys, balls and generally good with other pets but difficult to housebreak and little clipping is required. Norwich Terrier little dogs bred to work and they are more active, extra care should be taken.
