Norwegian Elkhound comes from Norway and is a dog of medium size. This is the first breed introduced in 1877 and it is one of the ancient breeds, it has thousands of years of old.
Norwegian Elkhound has been found dating from 4000 to 5000 BC. This dog was used in Scandinavia is a hunter of big game, especially moose and elk. They are well-suited for hunting since it works better at night than in day time.
In 1923 Norwegian Elkhound club was formed and this
dog breed has been honored as the national dog of Norway. This breed is also know as Elghund meaning “moose dog”, but it was called as Elkhound in English. This breed is happy, energetic and active.
Norwegian Elkhound has strength, an excellent sense of smell and stamina in the cold Norwegian winter.
It is squarely built and robust medium-sized dog.
Norwegian Elkhound eyes are dark brown and friendly with a keen, friendly expression and oval in shape. They had wedge shapped muzzle, a deep chest and thickly padded paws. The hair is straight, smooth and stands off from its body.
This breed requires daily brushing and it is independent, dominant and stubborn, this makes a good watchdog.
Norwegian Elkhound is combined with upright ears, dark eyes and tail is curled tightly it is a solid sturdy hunter.
Its neck is medium in size and its forelegs are straight and parallel to each other.
Norwegian Elkhound breed is seasonally heavy shedder. While the dog is shedding the dead hair clings to new hair this dead hair should be removed with rubber brush or wooden comb and bath if necessary. Their coat is both water and dirt resistant.

Grey in color with black tips to the long and covering with hair.

A dog's standard height varies from 19 to 21 inches while bitch's height varies from 18 to 20 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 50 to 60 Pounds while bitches weight vary between 40 to 55 Pounds.

A healthy
Norwegian Elkhound dog lives about 12 to 15 years.
Norwegian Elkhound is intelligent, dignified, independent and generally friendly. They are very people oriented and excellent with children. They are very friendly, energetic and have very docile dispositions. They require exercise daily atleast one hour per day.
Norwegian Elkhound is playful and protective and loves the outdoors specially in cold temperatures. They can hunt for long hours without tiring.

They are reliable, energetic and alert companions for children and make sensible guard dogs. They are good obedience dogs and are good in nature. Norwegian Elkhound are good tracking dogs and wonderful in agility. This breed has mind of its own and needs firm training.
