Norfolk Terrier was originated from the country of Norfolk in England. This breed was originally bundled in to combined breed with the Norwich Terrier but it is recently known as independent breed. The breed was officially developed in England as a small ratting dog. Norfolk Terriers adapt more easily to urban life. This breed was originally bred as barn dogs to rid the barn of vermin.

This is the first breed for rat hunting animal, the Norfolk Terrier is now more a companion dog and it has an excellent skills in catching or hunting the rat. Norfolk and Norwich started out as one breed but they are separated at England in 1964. This is lovable little dog among the smallest of the working Terriers.



Norfolk Terrier is short, strong, sturdy body with strongly boned legs and a fox like muzzle with large solid teeth. Its dark eyes add to its intelligent and alert expression, and their folded ears hang forward. Norfolk Terrier muzzle are strong and wedge shaped this is very active breed comparing to other breeds.

Their coat is very hard, wiry and straight, lying close to the body. Norfolk Terrier are little dogs were bred to work and their ears are hanging and tight to the cheeks. Norfolk Terriers tail is docked by half and they are okay joggers for short distance. This breed is long lived and hardy.

They are fairly active indoors and will do okay without a yard. Norfolk Terrier tail is medium docked, of sufficient length, straight, set on high and the base level with the topline. The shaggy, medium-length, waterproof coat is relatively easy, but they need daily combing and brushing. This breed is a light shedder and little clipping is required for this breed.

All shades of red, wheaten, black and tan, or grizzle.

A dog's standard height varies from 9 to10 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 11 to12 lbs.

A healthy Norfolk dog lives about 12 to16 years.



Norfolk Terrier is busy and curious they are easy to train but they have to follow some rules and regulations. Norfolk dog will dig and bark if they are left outside for a long periods of time and they very lovable and affectionate animals. This is an active dog breed and enjoy spending time with their family. Norfolk Terrier possess sensitivity and may be stubborn and they are good watchdogs. It loves everyone and good with children this will suffer sometimes from jealousy.

Norfolk Terrier as a Pet

Norfolk Terrier pet is loving, affectionate and makes a good family pet. This breed gets on well with children and is fine with other pets and it is an active breed and enjoys spending time with their family. Norfolk Terrier need regular exercise and they love toys, balls and generally good with other pets, but can be difficult to housebreak. Norfolk Terrier are okay in an apartment if it has properly trained.
