Mastiff founded in Britain as early as Roman invasion, the Noble Old English Mastiff was probably brought to that island by Phoenician traders as early as the 6th century BC. This breeds are used for hunting and war. During the second world wars, Mastiffs were used to pull munitions carts on the fronts where as in America they found on plantations as property guards.

This breed is universally acknowledged as a very ancient dog breed. These are originated in the Middle East, Russia, Turkey and Poland. This dog is used as a guard dog and this breed lost in Europe during world war II, but it replenished with American stock. Mastiff is a large, massive, symmetrical dog with a well-knit frame. Mastiff blood can be found in numerous modern breeds, including the Great Dane, St. Bernard, New Foundland and Chow Chow.

Mastiff is described throughout history and literature denoting its ongoing presence throughout England. Many breeds of Mastiff exists, each with different body types and distinct personalities. It was also used in the cruel sport of dog, bear and bull combat even if the activities were prohibited.



Mastiff dog is a strong and powerful dog with large, muscular build. It has large, square muscular head and they have wrinkles when they showing interest on something while they are in rest wrinkles will not get. Mastiff had wide set of eyes and they are very dark in color and they have wrinkles between their eyes.

Their ears are small with a v-shaped and ends are rounded they are in dark color. It has dark black muzzle, they had short and square with nostrils that are spread flat. Mastiff should not have any loose skin on the neck. It has long tail that starts out broad but tapers at the end. It has a wide broad muscular chest and some breeds have a white marking on the chest.

Mastiff is a double coat breed and the outer coat is short, coarse and straight. This breed is an average shedder. This requires minimal grooming and bathing or dry shampooing should be done when it is necessary. Mastiff can be a loyal and protective member of their family. It had a short bristly coat so very little grooming is required.

Fawn, apricot, or brindle.

A dog's height vary at 30 inches while bitch's height at 27.5 inches.

A dog's weight vary between 175 to 190 lbs.

A healthy Mastiff dog lives about 8 to 12 years.



Mastiff will rarely bark and this breed is confident, dignified and gentle-natured. It is a massive, muscular and powerful dog and it is one of the heaviest of breeds. They are good with children and these are fearless, alert and extremely courageous. Mastiff dogs are very powerful and majestic looking. They are often referred to as Gentle Giant and they are combination of dignity and grandeur. Mastiff dogs are good with children, household pets and with other dogs.

Mastiff as a pet

Mastiff pet are socialization and obedience are crucial for this breed. They are good in guarding, military, police work and weight pulling. This breed does best with patience, fairness, firmness, respect and consistency. Mastiff breed is naturally protective and is extremely possessive of their family and home. It is not a playful breed, but calm and dignified. These pets should be properly trained by their owners.
