Maltese origin come from Malta dating back to about 1500 B.C. This breed was first appeared at United States in 1877. It was developed in Italy with the addition of miniature spaniel and Poodle blood. Maltese dog is considered to be the oldest of the European Toy breeds. They are well mannered and affectionate. This breed became very popular with women.

Aristotle wrote about the Maltese in 350 B.C. In early Maltese were much larger and they are used for rodent hunting dogs in the woods and marsh lands. The glamorous Maltese is an adored pet and sought-after show dog. Among spectators maltese are one of the most popular breeds at dog shows and they are frequently winners of the Toy group.



Maltese is a Toy group dog which is covered from head to foot with a mantle of long, silky, white hair. Their eyes are dark, round, large and deep with dark rims. Its body is slightly longer than tall with a level topline. The Maltese is fine-boned, but sturdy and they are in pure white in color and light ivory is acceptable.

Its ears and tail are thickly covered with hair and the tail drapes over the back. This breed makes an excellent companion and they are intelligent, easy to train. Maltese coat is straight, lacks on undercoat and they are non-shedding. They are very good for apartment life. This should be bathed regularly with dry shampoo.

They are very active indoors and do okay without yard and clean the eyes daily to prevent staining, and they should be clean the beard after the meals. Their ears should be cleaned and hair should be pulled out growing inside the ear canal. Maltese eyes should be checked regularly and cleaned if necessary.

A dog's standard height varies from 8 to 10 inches while bitch's height varies from 8 to 9 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 6 ½ to 9 Pounds.

A healthy Maltese dog lives about 15 or more years.



Maltese are highly intelligent, animated and playful. They are gentle, trusting, loving and devoted to its master. Maltese are friendly and alert, but they are very social. This breed is sweet breed and gentle, but they may be reserved with strangers. They enjoy regular walk or session of frolicking in the park. They are quick learners and pick up new tricks. This dog breed will not tolerate young children and it will not mix well with other pets.

Maltese as a Pet

Maltese pets has a lovely stable, out going and sound temperament. Their training must not be harsh in nature and they should be trained with gentle, love consistency, reward and patience. They will not do well in hot climates or damp conditions. Maltese are bold and quick to sound the alarm in case of suspicious noises. These will do well with other animals and love to play outdoors sometimes they are picky eaters.
