Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhound is known as the king of dogs and these dogs are a type of domestic dogs. Their name describes their purpose of existence, which is for wolf hunting and depicts their strength and power.

About Irish Wolfhound

Ancient Irish Wolfhounds were found in Greece and Cyprus where the continental Celts used to have their homes. It is said that these dogs have been gifted with some precious possessions and thus they have been well known with some famous titles like, "King of Dogs and Dog of Kings" which became the popular slogan for the Irish Wolfhound fancier. They are termed as a giant breed.

This breed carries some problems related to their growth and development. They develop very fast and can cause damage to their bones during the period of their growth. Irish Wolfhounds are amongst the tallest dog breeds, along with their relatives, Great Danes.

Physical Appearance of Irish Wolfhound

Some physical attributes of Irish Wolfhounds are:
  • Size: The most discriminate feature of Irish Wolfhounds is its great size. The male dogs can be as tall as 33 to 36 inches whereas the female dogs can be 2 to 4 inches less tall than the male dogs.
  • Weight: The weight of these dogs is found to be between 46 to 70 kg.
  • Colors: The recognized colors of this dog breed are gray, red black, brindle, fawn and pure white.
  • Coat: They have a wiry stiff coat and a bearded face with great long jaws.
Their ears are small, not close to the face as in many pesters. Looking at these dogs give us an idea about the tremendous 'depth' of their body. Their front shoulders have a good layback and their rear legs are well angulated. This gives them complete freedom of movement and length of stride.

Behavior of Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhounds are sweet tempered, generous, thoughtful and trustful, especially with the children. Always dignified to their work, Irish Wolfhounds are always willing to do different tasks so that they can please their owners and prove their loyalty. They catch everyone’s attention because of their soft nature. This does not mean that they are not courageous. They are courageous, but not aggressive.

Irish Wolfhound as a Pet

The temperament of these dogs stays quite low as they are soft-natured and easy going. They are calm, around the house, and patient. These qualities make them a good dog with children pets, and with other dogs. It is said that Irish Wolfhounds need to be around people and need a lot of interaction to maintain their soft nature. This may sound good for the people who feel loneliness at their home.

Having Irish Wolfhounds can bring great deal of joy and pleasure to your life, as they make wonderful companions. Their soft behavior can add softness and calmness to your lives too.
