Harrier



The Harrier originates from England and is a dog of medium size, it is of hound class breed. It is used for hunting hares and rabbits. And it just looks like a English Foxhound, but it is smaller in size. It is a cross breed of French hunting dogs.

First in England harrier pack was established by sir Elias de Midhope in 1260 and it is spread out as a hunting dog through out the world. It is simply a bred-down version of the English foxhound. Harrier is a compact dog, speedy with finest sense of smell. Its name reveals its specialty.

This is a pack dog especially good with other dogs, and this prefers life in a pack with people, dogs or both. Harrier is an active dog, likes to go sniffing, trailing and exploring so it should be kept in a safe closed area. Hound dogs are also hunting dogs but they are different comparing to sporting dogs.



These are one of the few truly medium sized breeds of dogs. Harrier dog is a small, muscular hunting dog with a short, hard coat. It is slightly longer than tall, with a level topline. For stamina and strength it has large bones. Harrier tail is medium in size but not curled over the back. It has rounded ears are pendant, eyes are either brown or haze.

Harriers has wide nose with black. Its skull appears like strong square muzzle and teeth should meet in a level bit. Feets are tight and cat-like, and front toes may turn inward. Harrier is cheerful, sweet-tempered and tolerant. Their dimensions will vary according to their sex of the dog or puppy. It requires minimum amount of grooming and care is required to keep dogs and puppies to look their best. Grooming consists not only brushing of the coat and bathing but also need to care of their eyes, ears, teeth, feet and nails.

It comes into variety of color patterns.

Its standard height varies from 20 to 21 inches to the shoulders while bitch's height varies from 19 to 20 inches.

dogs weight vary between 45 to 60 lb while bitches vary between 35 to 45lb.

A healthy Harriers dog lives for about 12 to 14 years.



Harrier are more playful, outgoing and sweet than the foxhound. This dog breed is active and should have plenty of opportunity for exercise. It should have stamina to run with owner who likes to jog.

Harrier as a pet

They are moderate depending on their goals and they are very close to their working roots and bred to hunt hare. Harriers are socialized and basic manner its engery is moderate to high level. They can be happily kept either a house pet or barn dog and they are famous for family pet. It has proven its adaptability by being a wonderfull pet, show dog with excellent performance and tracking competition.
