Giant schnauzer is a large, powerful, compact breed of dog. It is a working breed dog originated in the 19th century in Bavarian and Wurttemberg regions of Germany. The word Schnauze means muzzle in German. Giant schnauzer is formed by crossing the dogs such as the black Great Dane, Bouvier des Flandres and the standard Schnauzer. They are most closely related to the spitz type breeds. It was first used as the cattle driving dog in Bavaria, then later as a guard dog by the police and as military dog during world war 1. This breed became scarce during world war 2 , but its popularity grew again after the war. It is a good companion dog. They are true thinking dogs and also known as Mittleschnauzer and schnauzer. Gaint schnauzer needs more food than some other breeds. This made them less popular for farmers in low budgets and in limited resources.



Giant Schnauzer is a large, powerful, compact dog. It is a medium-sized dog with healthy constitution. The eyes are dark brown and oval and front legs are straight and parallel. The tail is generally docked to the second or third joint and it is set moderately high and carried high in excitement. It has a harsh, wiry outer coat and dense, soft undercoat. The coat comes in solid black. Its neck is long, strong and slightly arched and skin close to throat. Gaint schnauze's skull is broad btween the ears. Its cheeks are flat but with well-developed chewing muscles and body is compact, substantial, short-coupled, and strong, with great power and agility. Its feet is Pointing directly forward, round, short, compact with closely arched toes.

Pure black and shades range from dark iron grey to light grey.

Dog's height is about 26-28 inches while bitch's height is about 23-26 inches.

Dog's weight is 60-80 pounds while a bitch's weight is 55-75 pounds.

A healthy Giant schnauzer dog lives for about 12-15 years.



The Giant Schnauzer is an intelligent, Versatile, strong, hardy, intelligent and vigorous dog. They are very protective, bold and spirited. calm, loyal, loving and responsible. Standard Schnauzers are sociable and can get along with the family. This dog breed can be used as an excellent guards and only bark when necessary. They are quick learners and can be used as retrievers. It is capable of great speed and endurance and resistant to weather. This is a dominant breed that needs an experienced trainer.

Giant schnauzer as a Pet

It loves to be with its owner at all times. They are not suitable for homes with children under the age of 12-14 years old. If Gaint schnauzer is properly trained it can be used as a good pet. They are good with other pets and some can be good with other dogs. These are not suited for apartment life and they need exercise regularly. They are easy to train and respond best to firm, consistent training with a positive attitude and plentiful rewards.
