French Mastiff is also known as Dogue de Bordeaux and it si treated as “ National Guard Dog of France” it is one of the most ancient breeds among today's existing purebred dog's. French Mastiff breed is served as a war dog and flock guardian it is combatant in dog gladiator sports where it was pitted against bulls, bears and other dogs. There are currently around 3000 Bordeaux in United States. French Mastiff is recognized by the FCI but not yet recognized by the AKC.

This is one of the oldest breed in France and it is the only Mastiff of French origin during the middle ages this dog breed was used as hunting and dog fighting. An official standard was recognized in 1926 after the breed as been crossed several times with mastiffs.



French Mastiff dog sometimes called as Bordeaux Bulldog is short, stocky, Mastiff with a huge, heavy , broad and wrinkled head. Mastiff breed does not like to socialize with other dogs. Its gentle, calm, sensitive dog forms a strong bond with its owner and they are very affectionate with children.

Their body is thickset with a short, straight topline and a gentle rounded croup, front legs are straight and heavy-boned. Its skin is thick and the skin on their neck is loose. French Mastiff eyes are oval, moderately wide set, body is powerful, very strong and almost cylindrical neck with dewlap.

For this breed very little grooming is required and it is an average sheeder. They are very inactive indoors and will do okay without yard. Its tail is very thick and it has fine, short, smooth and soft hair. French Mastiff ears are small and drop close to the head along the cheeks.

Colors range from fawn to mahogany red and brown.

A dog's standard height varies from 23 to 30 inches.

Dog's weight vary between 120 to 145 Pounds.

A healthy French Mastiff dog lives about 10 to 12 years.



French Mastiff has good and calm temperament, it is extremely loyal, patient and devoted to its family. This is aggressive with other dogs and it is very good watchdog and guard dog. French Mastiff breed as lot of positive experience in its youth and two walks each day running and playing is required. This breed is very affectionate devoted to its master and excellent with children.

French Mastiff as a Pet

French Mastiff pets are ancient fighting dogs and they love to play with children. These pets need little grooming and lot of exercise. Females are very protective of their pets and they are socialized very well with other animals from early age. French Mastiff are very gentle with children and family members. This breed is an average shedder and it makes good house pets even in homes with limited space.
