Fila Brasileiro

Fila brasilerio is a working dog breed developed from English Mastiff, Bloodhound, Bulldog and Rafeiros in 15th century in Brazil. They are tracking dogs and were used to track Brazilian slaves. It has loose skin and keen sense of smell. The Fila has the ability to track and control livestock and large game. Fila brasilerio is used to hunt big game and herd cattle. This dog is confident and very self-assured. When ever the Fila brasilerio finds its quarry it does not attack, but rather holds it until the hunter arrives. Due to its potential for aggression and size, it is banned in some countries.



The Fila brasilerio is well boned dog with a rectangular structure. The skin is one of the most important breed characteristics. It is thick and loose all over the body and its neck is very thick. The coat is short, smooth, dense and soft. Some dogs show a fold at the side of the head and also at the shoulders. While walking it maintains the head lower than the back line. Bitches will show a well-defined femininity, which differentiates them from males. The coat of the Fila Brasileiro is short, smooth and Solid yellow, reddish tans, and brindled colors are allowed. White marks are present on the feet, chest and at the tip of the tail. The main characteristic of Fila brasileiro is pace, means moving two legs of one side first, followed by the two legs of the other side, which causes a rolling lateral movement on the thorax and hindquarters

Brindle and all solid colors, except white or mouse gray.

Standard height is in between 24-29.5 inches.

Dog's weight is between 140-180 pounds while bitch's weight is in between 125-160 pounds.

A healthy Fila brasilerio dog lives for about 10-12 years.
