English Setter
English Setter are beautiful dogs, with slim body and ability to be recognized in the crowd. A friendly breed of dogs, which are sociable with other animals and children and highly active in outdoor activities, is what appositely describes these animals. Available in two varieties, field and show, these dogs are popular as pets for home.

About English Setter

English Setter dogs became popular amongst hunters as bird retrieving dogs in Britain during 19th century. However, the origination of this breed dates back in 1500’s, when Spanish Pointer and French Pointer were cross-bred in France. These dogs are obedient and posses long hair as their most prominent feature. Their temperament can be appropriately molded by providing right training to them, as rough training may take away their willingness to become good creatures.

Physical Appearance

The physical appearance of the dogs can be classified as follows:
  • Height: Up to 25 inches for male and 24 for female.
  • Weight: Between 60-65 lbs for male and 50-55 lbs for female.
  • Color: These dogs are available in various combinations of colors like white and orange, white and chestnut, black and white and so on. Speckling might or might not be present. May also be available in tricolor.
  • Shedding: These are medium shedding dogs, and have soft and flat coat on ears, chest and tail.
English Setter As A Pet

English Setters are highly admires as pet dogs, which are active indoors as well as outdoors. These dogs can bear climatic conditions similar to humans and are very friendly with children and other animals. These dogs demand good amount of exercise and easy grooming. Moreover, they are easy to train, provided the trainer offers good behavior towards them.

Character of English Setter

Described as gentleman by nature, these dogs are intelligent and can perform different types of tasks. With life expectancy of 10-14 years, these dogs are prone to diseases like hip and elbow dysplasia, congenital deafness, canine hypothyroidism and some forms of cancer. You may consider it as a wonderful companion and hunting dog.

  • These dogs retain good coat, provide they are entertained with regular brushing.
  • Show English Setters possess longer and heavier coats than field English Setters.
