English pointer is a sporting breed dog originated from England. It is the oldest breed of the sporting dogs. It was developed by crossing among the Italian Pointer, the Foxhound, the Greyhound, Bloodhound, the Newfoundland, the Bulldog, Setter. The direction of the pointer tells the hunter where the game is hiding. In 1700's the pointer became the dog of choice. It works very quickly, covering a lot of ground. The English pointer is particularly good on upland birds, but adapts well to other games also. This breed has excellent endurance in warm weather, but it is not suited to very cold conditions. It works best on land and it is not very comfortable in water. It has a legendary tracking and pointing skills.



English pointer is a powerful, graceful and aristocratic dog breed. It has an alert expression and a well-muscled body. The nose is set higher than the rest of the muzzle. Its upper lip is full but not slack and eyes are hazel or chestnut. The medium-sized ears are pendant and pointed. Its nose is same color as that of the markings on the coat. Its tail is longer and carried without curl, and not more than 20 degrees above the line of the back and it is never carried between the legs. English pointer shoulders are long, thin and slope. Its coat is short, sleek, shiny which is in white, liver, lemon, black or orange , and sometimes tri-colored is also allowed. It is full of energy and go-power.

A dog's standard height varies from 22-24 inches while a bitch's height varies from 21-24 inches.

A healthy English pointer lives for about 13-14 years.



It is wise and adaptable to any situation. Pointers are even-tempered, happiest living indoors dogs as part of the family. English pointer is not suited for apartment life. These dogs are fairly independent and generally good with other pets and are not usually dog-aggressive. It will bark at some suspicious noises, but cannot be used as a watch dog. Pointers acquire the hunting instinct at around 2 months of age. It is the first dog used to stand game. Now a days pointer is a family hunting dog and a good companion.

English Pointer as a Pet

English pointer is kind and patient with children and it is a dashing gentleman. It is a true friend, affectionate, intelligent and clean. They happily co-exist with other pets and reserved with strangers. Pointers are willing to work otherthan his master and they become a wonderful family dogs and good companion at any age. For this breed training should be given at the early stages. Harsh training should not be given.
