English cocker spaniel is a sporting dog breed. These dogs are found in the art and literature for almost 500 years. English Spaniels were divided into seven breeds: the Clumber, the Sussex, the Welsh Springer, the English Springer, the Field, the Irish Water spaniel, and the cocker. All these spaniels derive from a spaniel-type dog imported into England centuries ago. Because of the breed's happy disposition and continuously wagging tail, it has been given the nickname merry cocker. There are two types of English Cocker: field and show. The name Cocker comes from the woodcock, a bird this spaniel was originally bred to hunt. This dog breed are good at hunting other birds. They are excellent retrievers with delicate mouths. Now a days it is a companion dog due to its good-natured disposition. It is used for tracking.



English cocker spaniel is an alert, medium-sized, compactly built dog breed with long ears, reaching to the nose when pulled forward. The eyes are oval shaped in dark color with intelligent expressions. Its hair is medium length and legs are well feathered. Its nose is in black or brown depending on the coat color. The chest is very deep and well developed, and tail is docked. It consists cat-like feet with tight, arched toes. English cocker spaniel's coat is of medium-length, silky and smooth. The coat is in solid black, liver or red o rparti-color combinations of white with black, red or liver markings or ticking. Tan markings appears on black liver or parti-color dogs.

Dog's standard height is 15-17 inches while bitch's height is 14-16 inches.

Dog's weight is 28-34 inches while bitch's weight is 26-32 pounds.

A healthy English cocker spaniel lives for about 12-15 years.



English cocker spaniel is intelligent, lively, gentle, affectionate, sensitive and easy going dog. They are joyful, entertaining, and active friends to all people. It is sociable with strangers and a moderate barker. It obeys respectfully the orders it is given. English cocker spaniel should be trained very gently, but firmly, as they are sensitive but also independent and intelligent. They can do well with cats in the household. It enjoys swimming and hunts well in difficult terrain.

English cocker spaniel as a Pet

English cocker spaniel gets along very well with other dogs, family pets, and children. It is Merry and lovable and excellent with children but intolerant of teasing. These are friendly with everyone and is obedient of orders. Regular exercise is needed to keep them happy. It is suited for apartment life. Training should be given from the early stages. Daily 3 walks are necessary for this breed.
