Housebreaking a Puppy

Puppies are not yet competent enough to know how they are required to behave and handle themselves. Puppies are just like little human infants who are entirely dependent on the adults around to take care of them. Thus treat him and care for him like a baby if you have decided to get your best friend- to- be at your home.

Get for him a crate if you have not yet got one. If you choose to buy a full size one, then do not forget to partition it to the size in which your puppy is comfortable. It would be much easier to regularize your puppy’s toilet behavior if it is properly scheduled. Routine is the solution here. Give them food at the same time daily. Dog breeds would like to relieve themselves generally after a little while of eating. Thus take them outside at this time. Keep the duration somewhere near ten minutes, and stick to it daily. Do not allow him to come inside before these ten minutes have passed.

Increase the time intervals of taking him outside at a gradual pace. Keep it after every half an hour for the first day, and increase it with an additional thirty minutes daily. Stop when it reaches the four hour interval, and then stick to it thereafter. Spend as much time as you can with the puppy, especially in the first few weeks. Not only it helps you in understanding each other and bonding together, it also builds upon the trust and the routine that is required. While he is being trained, try to be around him most of the time so that you can monitor his actions and direct him if he does mistakes. Dog training must be given carefully. A simple command like ‘No’ with a stern tone would do the task. Always remember, you can punish the dog if he is caught in the middle of an act, but never do so after the accident has occurred. It would be no use by then as the dog must not be remembering the incident till then. He would not understand why is he being punished, and this would surely agitate him.

During the training of housebreaking a puppy If it spoils inside the home, remove it using a pet deodorizer. Household cleaners can also clean it but only superficially. The smell still remains and this makes your dog think that it would be normal to relieve himself inside the house as the smell is already there. Thus always use a pet deodorizer that removes all the smell.

Puppies under four months of age cannot hold their bladders for whole night long. Thus make sure that you take them out to relieve in night too.

If it is not possible for you to be with him for a day, then he should be left in a room that can be locked away from him thereafter, like a bathroom or store room. The room could then be easily cleaned, and the dog would also not smell there.
