It is only natural for a dog to dig. It is their natural disposition. They enjoy themselves by doing so. It is their natural recreational exercise. But at the same time, it cannot be tolerated if your flower bed gets all dug up by
dog breed. Using such strategies as punishing him or treating him to stop this behavior would only encourage him to continue with this practice. What is required on your part is an understanding of the causal reason behind why is your dog indulging in such activities. Once that is understood, it gets easier to train your dog in this regard.
Give them sufficient exercise so that they use up their pent- up energy in a resourceful manner. Otherwise they get bored and restless and end up
digging and chewing things which they should not be doing. Take them for regular walks of at least 30 minutes duration, for two times a day.
The digging behavior of your dog can also be due to a nutritional deficiency. This
dog digging has a medical terminology called ‘pica’. It is diagnosed as a state where non edible items are eaten on a regular basis for at least one month long duration. Thus get your dog a blood test done at a nearby veterinary clinic, so that it can be known whether any such deficiency is causing such behavior.
Some
dog breeds of dogs are natural diggers, mostly those which were used for hunting purposes in ancient times. To handle such breeds, there should be a separate area specified for them in your back lawn where they can be directed to go and dig whenever they feel like doing so.
Get your dog enrolled in a good
dog training program running in your local area. The dog then gets to learn and obey certain basic commands that can help in regularizing his digging behavior. Be strict but calm with him. Each time use the same words to direct a particular command. This makes him habituated to the sound and tone of the words of the command, and thus makes him aware of how is he required to behave.
Dogs also dig because they are looking for a cool, shady place to relax in summer season. Thus if you can take care to provide them with an alternative space of their own where they can unwind and relax, then their
dog digging behavior can easily be regularized.
Whenever your dog starts
digging, then you can also trick him by diverting his attention to an exercise that he likes, such as a game of fetch. He would love to run and achieve a task of fetching you what you had asked him to get. It would give him a sense of achievement, recreation, enthusiasm, all at the same time. Moreover, it would also build upon your relation as it is a great socialization exercise.
Always remember, your
dog breed is bound to show aggressive behavior if he is not given enough care and warmth. Thus spend time with him on a regular basis, so that he does not indulge in such activities as digging.
