Coton de tulear is a companion group breed originated from Madgascar. It is related to the bichon family of dogs. This dog breed was unknown until it was reintroduced to Europe and America in the last 20 years. This breed was introduced to the Islands of Mauritius and Reunion by sailors in the 16th and 17th centuries. The breed then acquired its cottony coat which is thought to be the result of a single gene mutation, known and called as Coton de Reunion, they became the companions of pirates, merchants, and noblemen in travel. This small, friendly dog caught the fancy of the Merina royalty, and was bred into name called as the Coton de Tulear. The original bichon-type extended back possibly one thousand years ago or more. Coton de tulear was recognized by the FCI in 1970. This is an intelligent dog.



It is a small breed of dog. Its eyes are round dark in color and wide set and ears are triangular in shape. The skull is rounded and muzzle is straight. Its feet are arched and small and its chest is well developed and reaches below the elbows. The tail is low and tapering, carried over the back. Some coton de tulear dogs will have yellowish markings on the ears. Coton is a French word for cotton. As the name suggests the most impoirtant feature of it is its coat. It has a medium-length, fluffy, cotton-like coat that is hair rather than fur. It consists a long topcoat. The fluffy hair covers the thin, lightly-muscled forelegs. Its expressions are lively and intelligent.

Black and white, white and tri-color.

Standard height varies from 10-12 inches.

Varies between 12-15 pounds.

A healthy coton de tulear lives for about 14-16 years.



Coton de tulear is playful, Very friendly, gentle, affectionate, and alert. It likes to jump and walk on their hind legs. Cotons love meeting new people and are curious in new situations. These dogs are trainable with praise, instead of punishment. These dogs perform well in various areas of dog sports such as catch and agility skills trials. It is an indoor dog but loves to play outside and can adapt any climate. With good breeder training they are trainable and will respond to love and kindness.
