Cocker spaniel is the smallest of all the sporting breeds originated in the U.S. It is also known as American Cocker spaniel developed by breeding the English cocker spaniels. American spaniel is smaller than English spaniel. It is the world's most popular household pet. Its name is originally came from the woodcock, a game bird these spaniels flushed well. These dogs can be used for hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdogging and agility. This breed is used to flush out birds and to prey from the brush so that their masters could easily shoot them. It is as always, a versatile small dog. It remains popular as a pet, but it is also known for its workmanlike attributes that make it a stunning show dog, competitive gamming dog, lively companion hunter, or gentle therapy dog. In 1946 American Cocker Spanial granted English Cocker spanial as a seperate breed.



Cocker spaniel is a beautiful dog with sturdy and compact and well-balanced dog. This dog breed has very long hanging years and its upper lip hangs down, covering the lower jaw completely. Eyes are round and eye rims slightly oval. The tail is docked to 2/5 it's original length and is carried on a line with its back. Its expressions are intelligent, alert, soft and appealing. The neck is long which allows its nose to touch the ground. Its ears, chest, abdomen and legs are well feathered. The coat is silky, flat or slightly wavy and of a texture with medium length. It is in buff, black, and other solid colors, black-and-tan. Cocker spanials shoulders are well laid back forming an angle with the upper arm. The hind legs are strongly boned, and well muscled.

A dog's standard height is between 14.5 to 15.5 inches while bitch's height ranges from 13.5 to 14.5 inches.

A Healthy Cocker spaniel lives for about 12-15 years.



Cocker spaniels are lively, playful, intelligence and devoted. Training for this dog is easy to train and get well along with other animals. They should be socialized when they are young to avoid shyness. Cockers have plenty of stamina and needs regular exercise. They are suited for apartment life and small yard is sufficient. It adapts well to any kind of environment and setting.

Cocker Spaniels are sweet, playful, good family dogs and these dog breeds are eager to please its owners. It can be used as a gun dog or a house hold pet. These are good with children and other pets and it loves everyone and need people to be happy. It is respectful of its master's authority without challenging and very eager to please the owners.
