
Chow Chow is one of the
oldest breeds of non sporting and often called as chow. Tarters invaded china and brought back to the west some middle sized dogs that looks like lions with blue black tongues during 12th century. Some scholars says that
Chow Chow was original ancestor of Samoyed, Pomeranian and the Keeshond. Other articrafts indicate that the chow was even much more older breed and it came originally from Siberia, Arctic circle.
In T'ang dynasty, it is reported that Chinese emperor kept some Chow dogs as hunting and sporting animals to accompany the hunters. This
breed was admired by emperors and used by chinese peasants for food and clothing. Chow Chows were once placed in zoos as a wild dog of china.

Chow Chow is square in profile with small, rounded ears. The most unique feature of it is blue-black color of the tongue and tissues on the mouth. It's eyes are almond shaped and dark brown. Its head and muzzle is surrounded by an off-standing ruff and sometimes lion-headed or lion-like words are used to describe the
Chow Chow's head.
The tail of chowchow is the most decorative part and it lies on the back. It consists a huge ruff behind the head.
Chow Chow can have two different types of coats,either rough or smooth. Both these coats are double coated with coarse and abundant outer layer and a thick, soft and woolly undercoat.

Cream-White, Red, Blue, Black, Fawn.

Standard height varies from 17-20 inches.

Varies from 45-70 lbs.

A healthy
chow chow lives for about 8-15 years.

Chow Chow is intelligent, very loyal and independent
dog. It adapts easily to the city or country living. They require consistent and firm training. Chow Chow requires cool place to rest in summer because it cannot tolerate high temperature. It is the cleanest dog of all other dogs. Chow chow should be kept in a room or in a fenced area to give them freedom. This
dog breed likes outdoors though they do not need exercise much. It can be used as a guard dog.
Chow Chow as a Pet
Chow Chow is friendly and faithful to his owner but they do not welcome the strangers. They are good with children and should be raised by experienced owners only and they can be trained easily as a good
pet. Dry and cool climate is best suited for this breed because of heavy coat. Chow Chow is not an active
breed and apartment life is suited for this breed.
