Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a charmingly witty, affectionate and modest dog that is fiercely devotional to its master. Cavaliers are definitely not kennel dogs, they are meant to stay indoors with the family. Having them as pets is a great idea.

About Cavalier Spaniels

The cavaliers are an eager and affectionate breed. They are sportive, playful and very sociable in nature. You can train them at will as they are highly intelligent and also very obedient. They get along with one and all, be it cats, dogs or small children. In fact, small children often get rough with these little creatures, so it is best to keep them in company of mature adults.

Physical Appearance

This small but beautiful spaniel breed has wonderful large and communicative eyes, with a docked tail and a cone-shaped muzzle. The skull area is flat and the nose is prominent with wide nostrils. They have feathery ears; the body coat is silky and wavy in texture. These lovable dogs have an average lifespan of 9 to 14 years.

Cavalier Spaniel as a Pet
  • This normally sweet spaniel, if pampered too much may think himself as a leader and that can cause behavior problems. Teach it to obey and respect the house members and its master.
  • Make them social so that they do not tend to get reserved in presence of strangers.
  • Train them well so that they become great help during hunting expeditions with their keen sense of smell and vision.
  • Do not leave them alone all day long.
  • Take them for a good walk, if you have neglected them the whole day
  • They are essentially hunting dogs and may develop instinct to chase, therefore always have them on a leash so that they do not run themselves towards a speeding car or get lost.

Behavior Patterns

This wonderful breed is generally social, loving and affectionate. Some of them could develop chasing habits. These are good indoor companions and best suited for apartment lifestyle. But too hot or warm climate may not suit their health. They need lots of exercise and daily walks.

Specific Traits of Cavaliers

They have long silky hair, which should be brushed or combed regularly. After bathing, they should be dried thoroughly. These spaniels are average shedders. They have an interesting ancestral value and are known to have been favorite pet dogs during King Charles II reign.

So, bring home this cute spaniel for a perfect companion dog.
