The Cairn terrier dog was originated in the highlands of Scotland and the isle of Skye. It is one of the oldest breed in terriers. Until 1909 Cairn terrier dog is unknown breed for the England. They are older than the Scottish terrier. Now
Cairn terrier is one of the most popular breed in England.
In Scotland this dog is used as a working terrier and formely called as a “Short-haired Skye Terrier ”. This
dog breed is smallest on all terriers. All remembered Cairn terrier dog as a “Toto” from "The Wizard of Oz" film onwards. Some of the talents of Cairn terrier are tracking, hunting, watchdog, competitive obedience, agility and performing tricks.
Cairn terrier dog is very active, hardy, game, small working terrier of the short-legged class; very free in its movements, strongly but not heavily built. The coat is Hard and weather-resistant double-coat with profuse harsh outer coat and soft, short, close furry undercoat.
Cairn terrier shoulders are good and medium size but not too heavy bone because of small size.
The forelegs are too straight and slightly turned out with larger fore feet. The eyes are wide, medium in size, dark hazel depending on the body color, with a keen
terrier expression. And the ears are small and well carried erectly with black color nose. Muzzles are very strong but not too heavy or long.

Mostly in black, white, gray, sandy, brindle, cream and wheaten, red.

Cairn terrier dog varies 10-12 inches and bitch height is 9.5 inches.

A healthy Cairn terrier dog life span is 12-14 years.
Cairn terrier is an intelligent, loyal, remain playful and active with long-lived busy body. They are eager to learn at the time of training and playful, cheerful.
Cairn Terrier is not too protective. The tendency of barking is low for this dog and transportation is very easy.
Training must and should for this dog
breed. Otherwise they become destructive and bark excessively. It is suitable for all weather conditions and active in indoor environment but need some time for outdoor. Little bit grooming is required.
Cairn Terrier as a Pet
Generally as a
family pet the cairn terrier is an affectionate with the family and is fairly independent, may be struggled if held too long. They are highly compatible with the children and likes to play with them. They are interested for a walk in woods or in open area where it is available to run free but be careful with these
dogs are strong in hunting and may be ran away.
