In late 18th century or early 19th century the Bullmastiff was originated in England. There were many large estates in England at the creation time. To protect and oversee the game in the estates gamekeepers employed. For this purpose the owners needed an able assistants. Then first mastiffs tried which were slow and next bulldogs were tried, which was very ferocious and tended to tear too much. Lastly Bullmastiff were tried which is successful and combination of 60% of Mastiff and 40% of bulldog.

The name of this dog breed takes from two ancestors such as the bulldog and the mastiff. Sometimes it is also called as a English Bullmastiff. Long days back Bullmastiff was used as gamekeepers to protect great estates from poachers. At that time originally they were called as a Gamekeeper's Night Dog.



The Bullmastiff is a combination of great strength, alertness, endurance, powerfully built and active. It is a symmetrical dog with always keen and intelligent expression. Bullmastiff breed coat is very short and dense with weather protection. The eyes are dark and in medium size. Ears are dark in color, medium size and carried close to the cheeks, set on high and wide, V-shaped and giving a square appearance to the skull.

The muzzles are deep and broad with slightly arched neck which is very muscular, of moderate length, and almost equal in circumference to the skull. Bullmastiff dog body is compact , wide and deep chest, with ribs well set down between forelegs and well sprung.

Mostly available in red, black and brindle, fawn with black muzzle, red and brindle.

Normally the dogs height varies from 24-27 inches.

Bullmastiff weight is approximately in the range of 90-130 lbs.

A healthy bullmastiff dog lives 10-12 years.



The Bullmastiff is very gentle, calm and even-tempered. This Bullmastiff dog is fairly sweet, good-natured, lovable and fearless dog. This dog can be used as guard dog and watch dog. The tendency of barking is low and highly protective. Transportation is very easy.

Normally These dogs are very lazy. To control the weight of bullmastiff, daily sufficient exercise is needed. They are compatible with all weather conditions but setter is needed. Minimal grooming is required. The training is very easy while start at younger stage.

Bullmastiff as a Pet

Bullmastiff is a great companion and guard dog. They are very affectionate and loving human attention. It is a perfect family protector. This dog breed is highly compatible with children and other household pets like dogs, cats. They may highly aggressive with strangers and behaves very roughly. So try to keep in control when strangers came to house.
