Brussels Griffon is a wonderful
dog breed, often known as toy dog. It got its unique name from the city of its origin-Brussels in Belgium.
About Brussels Griffon
There are three distinct breeds of
Griffon dogs namely; Griffon Belge, Petit Brabancon and Griffon Bruxellois. These breeds are very identical in physical appearance and other traits except for variations in color and skin coat.
Physical Appearance
Griffon Brussels is a strong toy dog with distinctive physical features like a dome-shaped head, short nose, beautiful radiant eyes and undershot jaw line. The head is larger as compared to the body. The tail is docked and straight. Brussels griffon is very popular for its humane expressions. The ears are tiny and cropped in style, the muzzle is also short. These dogs have two coat varieties- one is smooth while the other is rough. Usually, the Petit brabancon
breeds have smoother coats, whereas the roughed up coat belongs to the Belge breed.
Griffon Brussels have a height of 7 to 8 inches and weigh less than 12 pounds. They are active indoor partners, who still need occasional walks out in natural surroundings. They have a life span of 12 to 15 years. The good part about these pet dogs is that they shed little or no hair, though the coats may need occasional clippings.
Brussels Griffon as a Pet
The griffon is an extremely intelligent dog with a charming and lovable disposition. It is loaded with personality and curiosity. This breed being full of life makes a great companion as a
pet. It is very affectionate in nature and may sulk, if you give it a kennel life. It is more of a family dog to be bred at home, rather than kennels.
Character Traits
Griffon Brussels are surprisingly good natured with other
dogs and even cats. They can be molded into fine watchdogs or to perform unique tricks. Their almost human faces are meant to be taken seriously, so you better consider them as respectful humans. But see that you have the upper hand; otherwise these dogs could also be demanding, aggressive and moody in behavior.
Specific Traits of Brussels Griffon
Brussels griffon became friends to human beings during 17th century, when people needed small witty dogs to keep pesky rats out of horse stables. In the 18th century these Belgian dogs became very popular and were known as haired stable dogs.
Even today
Brussels Griffon are considered popular pet dogs. But, whatever the breed, dogs are after all the very best four-legged companions man could possibly get.
