Boston terrier was originated in England and United States around 1870. This breed became sufficiently popular in 1889 at Boston that fanciers formed the American Bull Terrier Club. After in very short time the club changed its name to the Boston Terrier Club by taking the suggestion of James Watson.

In 1893 Boston terrier was recognized by American Kennel Club which is the first breed from the United States. It is the first non-sporting dog in the United States. It gets more popular during the 1920 in the US. Some male dogs are till challenge other dogs, if they feel their territory is being invaded.



Boston terrier are small, compact and well proportioned dogs. This dog expression is a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well balanced dog. Boston terrier breed skull is flat on top, square, free from wrinkles, with flat cheeks. Eyes are dark in color, wide apart, round and large. The nose is wide and black. Muzzles are square, short, wide, deep and in proportion to the skull.

These dogs body appears very short with good width and deep chest. Ears of boston terrier are always erect with displaying the expression as very intelligent and small. The feet is compact and small with short nails. The tail is very short set on low, tapering and fine, straight or screw.

Mostly available in black brindle, red brindle, or black, all with white markings.

The height of Boston terrier dog varies from 15-17 inches for both dogs and bitches.

The weight is approximately 10-25 lbs for both dogs and bitches.

A healthy Boston terrier lives 15-17 years.



The Boston Terrier is sturdy, compact and small but is not delicate or fragile. This breed has a kind nature which is often referred to as the American Gentleman. These dogs are high-spirited, playful and lively. This Boston Terrier dog is a delightful combination of determination, strength, gracefulness and balance.

At the time of training these dogs are eager and quick to learn. Litter size of Boston Terrier is on average 3-4 puppies. Boston Terrier is suitable for apartment or city life. Inactive in indoor and also suitable with outdoor environment without yard.

Boston Terrier as a Pet

Boston Terrier is very good with children and also to the other household pets. They enjoys playing with their owners and very easy to carry. They are not interested for long walks. Exercise is needed daily but not too much. They can feel better in cold weather and suffer with heat weather. It is always alert and enthusiastic which is loyal and affectionate.
