The Bichon frise was originated in France at Mediterranean area. Bichon frisewas descended from the Water spaniel or Barbet. Generally the Bichon frise dog is one of the category in Bichons. The other three were Bichon Maltais, the Bichon Havanais and the Bichon Bolognais.

First Bichon frise was appeared in cross between the poodle and the Barbet water spaniel in 14th century. In 16th century it became a favourate of French Royal Courts. It was mainly popular as circus performer and organ grinder's dog. Now a days this dog breed is used as show dog and a companion dog.



The Bichon frise breed appears very little white dog with charming expression. These dogs are having loosely curled double coat. The undercoat is 3-4 inches with silky, fine and velvety outer coat. The chest is well developed with a long neck. The eyes are bright, intelligent and dark black or brown in color.

The hanging ears of Bichon frise are well covered with hair. Particularly the fur of Bichon frise looks like a little marshmallow puff dog. The muscles are moderate and especially the lower thighs. The lips and nose are always black. The skin around the eyes are called as “halo”always in very dark color.

Generally available in white color, some times in cream color.

The dogs height varies from 9-12 inches and bitches height varies from 9-11 inches.

The weight of the Bichon frise Bichon frise dog varies from 7-12 lbs.

A healthy Bichon frise lives 14-16 years.



Bichon frise is a charming, intelligent, bold, lively, affectionate and has an independent spirit which is not yapper. These dogs are used as watch dogs and performing tricks which is obedient, competitive and may be difficult to housebreak.

The Bichon frise are very active in indoor environment or apartment with following proper exercise. In 1980's Bichon Frise was very popular as one of the "Yuppie Puppies". The litter size is on average 4-5 puppies.

Bichon frise loves everyone and very easy to train. Naturally these dogs are happiest and sociable when it is a part of a family. Bichon frise is very easy to carry and best company for other house pets and dogs and also excellent with children. They get sudden bursts of energy resulting in the "blitz" or "buzz", they are happy, when they run constantly in circles.
