Beagle



Beagle breed was first described in almost 400 B.C. Greece and A.D. 200 Britain. These Beagle breeds transported to England including with small rabbit hunting hounds which bred them with the local hounds. Talbot Hounds were brought to England from France and are considered to be ancestors to the Beagle, the Southern Hound and the Foxhound.

In 13th and 14th century the Beagles became quite popular with the British monarchy. In 14th century the Beagles existed in Italy, Britain, Greece and France. The word "beagle" had taken from the Celtic word "beag" which means small or from the French word "beagle" meaning "useless or of little value".

In the 17th century two types of hounds existed for hunting rabbits one is the Southern Hound and the other is North Country Beagle. In 1876 the Beagles were imported into the United States and accepted as a dog breed by the American Kennel Club in 1884.



The Beagle is a sturdy, compact, hardy and small hound. These dogs have weatherproof coat which is short and dense. The head is powerful, finer in the bitch, with fair length which were free from frown and wrinkle. The skull is moderately wide and slightly domed. The eyes are fairly large, dark brown or hazel in color, set well apart with mild, with appealing expression.

The ears are long, set on low, with rounded tip and hanging gracefully close to cheeks. Beagle feet are firm and tight with short nails. The tail is moderately long,sturdy. Set on high, carried gaily but not curled over back or inclined forward from root. And it is well covered with hair, especially on underside.

Black, white with shades of tan or red , may be single or combination of these colors.

The height of the Beagle dog varies from 13-16 inches.

Beagle weight is approximately 18-30 lbs.

The expected life span of Beagle is 13-15 years.



They are very intelligent, independent and energetic breed. Generally these dogs are used for hunting purposes. Personal protection is low for this breed and is moderately suitable for guard dog as well as watch dog. The tendency of barking is very high and have minds of their own. They don't like to live alone for a long time. These beagle dogs are active indoors but do best with small yard. And also it is suitable for apartment or city life. These dogs tolerates with both heat and cold environments.

Basset Hound as a Pet

This Beagle breed used for hunting in last days, now they become good family pet. They are excellent with the children and also good with the household pets but may chase smaller pets. Proper socialization is necessary for this dogs during the younger stage which is useful for other household pets especially with cats. They needs a little bit exercise daily and should be walked on a leash. Light grooming is necessary for this breed.
