In 1585 the Basset hound was originated in France. In seventeenth century Basset Hounds were used extensively in entire France. Next they are transported to England and United States in 18th century. In the Medieval France hunting was a classic sport. The Basset Hound club was formed in 1883.

The name of Basset hound came from French word 'bas' which gives the meaning low. Naturally this dog breed is used for hunting, opossum, hare and pheasant. The litter size of Basset hound is on average 8 puppies.



Basset hound is appeared with a combination of characteristics of three breeds like sense of smell, head and bone of a bloodhound, the legs of a Dachshund and the coloring of a Foxhound. Basset hounds coat is always short, hard, dense with smooth making it weather resistant which should be firm in texture and straight.

The head of basset hound dog is large with pronounced occiput and a rounded skull. The skin is very loose-fitted which falls folds on the head. The ears are very long and pointed to downwards. The eyes are brown in color and looks sad with prominent haw. Always the expression is very kindly without harshness.

Available in all colors like red, black, gray, brown etc.

Both dogs and bitches height varies from 13-15 inches.

The weight of the dog is approximately 50-70 lbs.

A healthy Basset hound lives 9-15 years.



The Basset hound is a quiet, peaceful, sweet, playful and very gentle, companionable breed. It is very sensitive, looks lazy and less energetic when compare to other breeds. The tendency of barking is high. They are moderate for guard dog and not suitable for house breaking. There is no problem when you live it alone.

Basset hounds are calm, looking serious and having a sense of humour. Little shedding is needed. The living conditions are like that in indoors it is very inactive but suitable for apartment. In the outdoors there is no need for yard, Basset hound like to play with run to keep itself trim and healthy.

Basset Hound as a Pet

Basset hound is a perfect household pet because of its well- behaved nature. The long ears of basset hound looks lazy and sensitive breed which makes them best with the older children. There is a tendency of sturbbing but never timid and hostility. Little grooming is required for Basset hounds.

Basset hound loves their family and more affectionate with children and also does well with other animals or house pets. The training must be with patient and somewhat gentle because of its sensitivity of Basset hound. They needs lot of exercise to keep them healthy.
