In nineteenth century the Australian shepherd was developed in United States from Merino farmers. And some one said Australian shepherd originated in spain which was used by the Basque farmers. It comes under working breeds. In 19th century and early 20th century the further development of this dog breed took place in California and Western North America.

Compare to all working breeds it has a considerable energy and usually needs a job to drive. In American west the main function of Australian shepherd as effective stock dog and became more popular in rodeos as performing dogs. Their skills and shunts earned them in different Disney films like Run 'Appaloosa Run and Stub'. Early the nick name of the breed was 'ghost eye dog'.



The Australian shepherd coat is straight to wavy, striking, weather resistant and varied coat with moderate length. At th side of head the ears are placed on high, triangular in shape and slightly rounded at the tip. The undercoat is varies according to the climate. The Australian shepherd chest is deep strong and stands squarely.

The hair around the eyes and ears should not be white. And hair on the utside of the ears, front of the forelegs, on the head is shorter than remaining parts. Generally this shepherd dog breed tail is docked, mid length and short bobbed, which appears stubby. The oval shaped eyes are in medium size with brown, amber, blue or any variation including flecks and marbling.

Black merle, white merle, red, blue merle with tan points or white markings.

The dogs height varies from 20 to 23 inches and bitches height varies from 18 to 21 inches.

A healthy Australian shepherd dog having 50 to 65 lbs and the bitches are varies from 40 to 55 lbs.

The life span varies from 12-13 years.



Australian shepherds are easy going, loyal, courageous and very unaffectionate. They can become destructive and nervous if left alone for along time. The litter size of Australian shepherd is on average 6-9 puppies.

They are more protective and tendency of barking is high. It is highly suitable for risk of sheep worrying and better for guard dog. In indoor life they are not active means not suitable for apartment life. They will do best and feel free with a large yard is present.

Australian Shepherd as a Pet

The compatibility of Australian shepherd with the other animals is very low. They are highly intelligent and very easy to train. The Australian Shepherd requires fair , firm, consistent, and effective direction. Naturally they are suspicious to strangers. It is a good family pet.They need lot of exercise. The coat is very easy to groom. They have sixth sense what their owner wants to do.
