Akita Inu

The Akita inu originated in Japan in sixteenth century. At that time Akita inu's were used as a hunting purpose. In 1630 the clan started to encourage the dog fightings. People from other regions of Japan began to breed Akita after the Meiji Restoration. After the First Sino-Japanese War Akita was later bred with Karafuto and Hokkaido dogs.

Because of lack of food the Akitas are reduced at the II World War time. In 1945 the war was completed. At that time approximately twenty Akita dogs were present. After that this dog breed became more popular. In that time Akita was a largest Japanese dog.



The Akita inu is appeared solid with tight skin and well developed tendons and muscles. The body length of female is slightly longer than male dog. Akita inu head is large and flat on top. The neck is sturdy and very thick with proper angle. Ears are also very thick, small, triangular shape with proper angle.

The eyes are also in triangular shape and they are somewhat raised at th outer corners. The iris appears as yellowish dark brown. The teeth are more powerful having proper bite. The tail of Akita inu dog is very thick and curls free left, right, single or double curls. The outer coat is straight but undercoat is thick and soft like cotton.

The dog height varies from 26-28 inches and bitches height varies from 24-26 inches.

Both dogs and bitches are having on average 75-110 lbs.

For both dogs and bitches the life span is 9-11 years.



Akita inu is a large breed which is having a moderate exercise. These are very quiet dogs which makes owner feel calm and relaxed. The outstanding characteristics of Akita inu as a house pet are that they are very easy to house break and very clean. Because of these characteristics some times It can be described as a “cat like”.

The characteristics of Akita inu are obedient, dignity, agility, devoted and possesses composure. They can tolerate hot weather, feel free for cold weather because of double coat.

Akita Inu as a Pet

Akita inu is highly protective nature. This breed is suitable for guard dogs and the tendency of barking is very low. The compatibility with the children and family is very low. Compare to the dogs bitches are better with the children. They are courageous, independent and more amenable with cats.

Now a days these are used as guard dogs, companions and seen in show ring. They are very loyal to their owners. Akitas are jumpers, so there is a necessity for high fencing when they kept in outside.
