African Wild Dog



African wild dog is originated in the South Africa at Sahara desert. Genertally they are commonly visible in Southern Africa environment except rainy forests. It is also called as a Cape hunting dog and the painted dog.

In southern Africa, wild dogs are confined to large in some areas, such as the Hwange, Kruger, Moremi, Gonarezhou and Chobe parks as well as in the smaller Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park. In the Bushmanland region of Namibia Free-roaming packs occured. African wild dog status is unknown in Mozambique.



The African wild dog is a long ledged animal in size and slim of an Alsatian dog. The coat color is a combination of black, white and tan with spotted coloration. Each one has its own unique pattern with above combination. This dog breed is very different when compare to the normal dogs. Toes are present in each foot.

The African wild dog is having large rounded ears which can contribute,pointed to upright and charaterise to an extremely sensitive for hearing. It is a pack living animal which is similar to the wolf. The eye site of African wild dog is very good which takes the important role in hunting. It's body is strongly muscled, thin and legs also thin.

Tri-colored dog means combination of black, white and tan.

The legth of the body varies from 30-40 inches and the length of the tail varies from 12-16 inches.

Approximately the weight is 44-60 pounds.

Maximum African life span is upto 10 years.



African wild dog is a endangered animal. The endangered means that it is very danger while increasing the number to survive. Generally these dogs are hunting grazing animals like springboks, gazelles, zebras and wildebeest for their food. In zoos they are liked to eat bones and dried dog food.

They are used to form one group to hunt the animals as upto upto 15 adults with their young. Each pack contains one dominent male and female which can take the important role while hunting and all other dogs cooperate together for rearing pups. A hooting call with excitement , called “whooo” is used to gather their group or pack when it breaks. Approximately African wild dog gestation is 70 days with a litter of 7 to 10 pups.

The African Wild Dog mainly utilize floodplains, wood lands, riverine forest, savannah and semi arid zones. They can't able to see at night. Particularly for African wild dog deseases are fatal and wipe out in a few days.
